Owl Triumphant
Here is another image inspired by the woods of Northern Michigan. I didn't actually see one of these but I sure could have considering some of the walks we took. Sometimes imagining something is almost as good as experiencing something.
I recently returned to making art with traditional art materials after trying my hand at digital mediums. Previously, I had liked how easy it was to cover over or erase parts of the work I didn't like on the computer. While this aspect is freeing there are other aspects of digital mediums I don't like so much. For instance, it is hard to make inexpensive prints with a high level of color fidelity. More importantly, the digital prints lack texture and materiality.
Now, working with paper and graphite or colored pencil, I am faced with the challenge of bringing to completion a piece that is perhaps 70% finished but then I make a fatal error that simply is not fixable. Then I have to start all over again. I feel a little like I am walking out on thin ice when I am getting close to victory. That's why I felt triumphant once I wrapped up this drawing, maybe a little like this owl must feel as he gets ready to enjoy his catch after a harrowing chase.
